It's All Just Phlogiston -- The Photography of Clint Weathers

Photography, Etc.

You've stumbled your way across the intarwebs, only to end up here -- Phlogiston.

What is Phlogiston? Historically, it's what ancient (pre-Newton, that is) scientists thought the world was made of. They were wrong.

I call this site Phlogiston because every time I think I know what the world is made of, I'm wrong too.

I guess we should get the introductions out of the way?

Hi, I'm Clint. I started out doing photojournalism for a theatre company and also for a university newspaper. Since then I've taken an interest in contemporary narrative portraiture and in images of irony in urban settings. I have a day job doing responsible things and have a resume that shows the past jobs I've had. I'm not different from anyone else that way.

I'm influenced by a lot of photographers: The Minnesota triumverate of Alec Soth, Angela Strassheim and Shen Wei for their aesthetic, Elliot Erwitt and Martin Parr for their whimsy, Irving Penn and Duane Michals for their unwavering commitment to their vision, Rose & Olive for their courage and Sanders McNew for his grace. There are others. Lots of them. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Lately I've been working on a project of figure studies using plus-size models -- obviously influenced (and completely humbled by) the Full Body Project that Leonard Nimoy did. Being an overweight person myself, I find that the world is full of negative messages for large people. Maybe I can help ameliorate that by giving larger women a forum to show that beauty does not begin at size 0 and end at size 2.

Here's a list of people for whom I've done paid or published work:

I've shot a couple of weddings this year. They were my last and I no longer shoot weddings. If you need a referral, I do know many good wedding photographers in the Twin Cities and Atlanta areas.
